R&B hitmaker Robert Sylvester Kelly won three Grammys, had many number-one singles and was in consistent rotation on the radio in the 1990s. However, his legacy is highlighted by his criminal convictions, which he added to on September 14. In a federal prosecution, a jury found him guilty of inducement and child pornography.
Kelly was charged in the present trial with deceiving teenage followers into sexual connections and then filming the assault. According to witnesses, some of his victims were as young as 14 when they met the singer.
Despite this victory, prosecutors dropped the most severe charge against Kelly in his 2008 trial for obstructing justice. In that case, the singer was cleared of child pornography charges. Still, the prosecution said he paid off a witness and her parents not to testify to escape a conviction.
Kelly was found guilty on six of thirteen charges by the jury in the current case. Even if the obstruction charge is dropped, he faces up to 90 years in prison, a life sentence for the 55-year-old former star.
