US Military’s Newest Mini Aircraft Carrier Is Powerful Beyond Words

Regardless of the competence (or lack thereof) of the present occupant of the Oval Office, the nation’s defense strategy and the technological tools that keep Americans secure to continue to advance. For instance, the US Navy just began operating a cutting-edge new aircraft carrier, while the US Air Force recently showcased a new sixth-generation stealth bomber.

The USS Tripoli (LHA-7) finished its first deployment on November 29 and returned to Naval Base San Diego, the base of operations for the Pacific Fleet Surface Navy. The ship has been operating in the 3rd and 7th Fleets’ operational zones for the last seven months. The Aleutian Islands, the Bering Sea, and a portion of the Arctic Region are all part of the northern and eastern Pacific Ocean regions that the 3rd Fleet patrols. The Kanagawa Prefecture of Japan is home to the 7th Fleet’s headquarters.

The USS Tripoli, a Wasp-class wide deck vessel that can house the F-35B Lightning II strike fighter jet and the Bell Boeing MV-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft, is technically an amphibious assault ship. Both aircraft are capable of vertical takeoff and landing. Since it can move in spaces too narrow for a typical carrier-class ship, Tripoli functions as a miniature aircraft carrier and adds a surprise factor to a situation.

The Third Expeditionary Strike Group commander, Rear Admiral James Kirk, commended the USS Tripoli’s excellent deployment. He said, “The ship and crew are on the cutting edge, testing the boundaries of assault ships, the new vessel.”
