Starbucks Closing New Orleans Location Amid Safety Concerns

As autumn approaches, many people are eager to get their hands on a famous pumpkin spice latte from their favorite Seattle coffee chain. However, customers in one region of New Orleans may soon be unable to obtain a cup of the famous fall beverage unless they travel to a new location. They’ll be able to get a cup of Joe from the Canal Street Starbucks until October 3. Due to security concerns, the company declared that it would permanently close that location.

In a letter to partners in July, the business warned that continued safety difficulties and other location issues would result in shop closures. CEO Howard Schultz acknowledged that closures would begin that month. The Canal Street property on the chopping block is directly in the heart of a crime-ridden neighborhood. As per Metropolitan Crime Commission figures released by Fox Business, New Orleans had the highest murder rate in the United States as of September 11.

Even though the coffee giant has decided to close one of its stores in the area, the company has five other outlets in the city. Other surrounding companies appear unconcerned. According to Fox Business, business owner David Rubenstein acknowledged concerns but sees no need to close.

The Downtown Development District sent a statement to WGNO saying it was sad to see Starbucks close that site but emphasized that more than half of its funding went into making the neighborhood as secure as possible.
