Famous Singer Loses Bid To Trademark “Queen Of Christmas” Title

Mariah Carey is one of our most well-known female music stars; at this time of year, she stands out even more. Since its debut in 1994, her holiday single “All I Want For Christmas Is You” has become a seasonal staple. Recently, Carey attempted to use a trademark to profit even more from her association with Christmas, but her request was denied.

The singer attempted to copyright the nickname her admirers had given her over the years: “Queen of Christmas.” Her application for the terms “Christmas Princess” and “Princess Christmas,” along with several others, was turned down by the US Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. The lines were reportedly intended to be used by Carey as branding for various products, including lingerie, cosmetics, jewelry, beverages, toys, and dog clothing.

Carey encountered opposition from other entertainers, such as Elizabeth Chan and Darlene Love, after initially requesting the rights in March last year. Chan even filed a document opposing the application.

According to Songstats data, “All I Want For Christmas Is You” sees a significant increase in Spotify listenership and playlist additions during the holidays every year. However, this is insufficient to formally enthrone Mariah Carey as the Queen of Christmas.
