One of the most contentious members of Congress is Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). The New York Democrat is a vocal progressive who gained notoriety by attempting to push the nation to the far left. She is currently being investigated.
As she is known, AOC is being looked into by the House Ethics Committee for potential ethics violations, according to a statement released on December 7. The notification gave no information regarding the allegations against the congresswoman other than to note that on June 23, 2022, the Office of Congressional Ethics had forwarded a notice regarding potential violations.
Business Insider claims that AOC’s attendance at the Met Gala in 2021 may have sparked the ethics investigation. The congresswoman showed up to the celebrity-studded affair wearing a Brother Vellies custom-made ivory dress with the words “Tax the Rich” written across it in red. The Democrat was accused of receiving gifts for attending the event by the American Accountability Foundation.
According to Public Citizen lobbyist Craig Holman, it would depend on who paid for her ticket to the event whether or not she broke any rules.
According to the Ethics Committee, a referral does not imply wrongdoing on the part of the lawmaker. It simply signifies that an investigation will be conducted. When the committee wraps with its probe is a mystery.
Ocasio-Cortez’s office stated to USA TODAY that they are “confident that this matter will be dismissed.”
